The 2022 BMW 118i M Sport is a hatchback that exudes style, performance, and a dash of exclusivity. As part of BMW’s 1 Series lineup, the 118i M Sport combines a sporty driving experience with premium build quality, making it a tempting choice for those who want practicality with a touch of excitement.

BMW has taken a bold approach with the 1 Series, and the 118i M Sport benefits from the sporty flourishes that set it apart. The signature kidney grille is larger than ever, flanked by sharp LED headlights that lend the front end an aggressive edge. The M Sport styling adds dynamic bumpers, sleek side skirts, and 18-inch alloy wheels, ensuring the car looks every bit the part of a hot hatch, even if the performance sits at a warm level. Finished with a range of vibrant colours, the 118i is bound to turn heads.

Inside, the 118i M Sport impresses with its clean, driver-focused design. The materials are premium, and the fit and finish are top-notch, as you’d expect from BMW. The sport seats are firm yet supportive, and the leather-wrapped steering wheel feels just right in your hands.

BMW’s iDrive system remains one of the best in the business. The 8.8-inch central touchscreen is responsive and intuitive, while the rotary dial offers a tactile alternative for those who prefer physical controls. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included as standard

Space is reasonable for a hatchback, with enough room in the rear for adults on shorter journeys. The boot offers 380 litres of space, matching rivals like the Audi A3 and Mercedes A-Class.

The 1.5-litre three-cylinder petrol engine under the bonnet of the 118i produces 136bhp, providing plenty of punch for everyday driving. It’s not blisteringly quick, with a 0-62mph time of 8.5 seconds, but it feels eager and smooth, especially in lower gears. The six-speed manual gearbox is a delight, offering precise shifts that add to the car's engaging character.

BMW’s switch to a front-wheel-drive platform for the 1 Series was controversial, but the 118i still handles brilliantly. The M Sport suspension tightens things up, offering a composed and agile ride without being overly harsh. Steering is well-weighted and accurate, making the 118i genuinely fun to throw around on a twisty B-road.

The 118i strikes a good balance between performance and efficiency, with BMW claiming around 45 mpg combined. Insurance costs and road tax remain competitive for the segment, and the car’s relatively low emissions should keep company car drivers happy.
