The Toyota Aygo has long been a staple of the city car segment, offering a compact design, excellent reliability, and low running costs. The 2020 Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i continues this trend, boasting a stylish design, improved technology, and a frugal engine.

Toyota refreshed the Aygo’s design in 2018, giving it a sharper front end with an “X” motif across the grille. The 2020 model carries this forward with LED daytime running lights, bold colour options, and a compact yet modern silhouette. It’s a car that stands out in the city car class with its youthful and quirky styling.

Inside, the Aygo is well-built, though it leans towards a more budget-friendly feel with hard plastics. The cabin is designed for practicality, with a decent driving position and clear instrumentation.

Standard equipment varies by trim, but even the base models come with a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Higher trims add features like a reversing camera. While space in the front is adequate, rear passenger room is tight, making it more suited to occasional use rather than long journeys. Boot space is 168 litres, which is on the smaller side compared to rivals.

Under the bonnet, the 1.0-litre VVT-i three-cylinder petrol engine produces 72bhp and 93Nm of torque. While these figures may seem modest, the Aygo is a lightweight car (around 850kg), meaning it feels nippy in city traffic. The 0-62mph sprint takes around 13.8 seconds, so it’s not the quickest, but it’s perfectly fine for urban driving.

The Aygo’s five-speed manual gearbox is smooth. The steering is light, making it easy to park, and the small turning circle is ideal for tight city streets. At motorway speeds, the Aygo can feel a bit under powered, but it remains stable and composed.

Toyota claims up to 56.5mpg, which is impressive for a petrol city car. Insurance costs are low (group 6-8 depending on trim), and Toyota’s strong reliability record adds to the appeal.

The Aygo comes with Toyota Safety Sense, which includes autonomous emergency braking (AEB), lane departure warning, and hill start assist. It scored four stars in Euro NCAP crash tests, performing well for its class.

The 2020 Toyota Aygo 1.0 VVT-i is an excellent choice for urban drivers looking for a stylish, efficient, and reliable city car. It’s well-equipped, cheap to run, and easy to drive. However, its small boot and tight rear-seat space mean it’s less practical than some rivals. If you mainly drive in the city and prioritise low running costs and reliability, the Aygo is a great choice.
